Adventure Lagoon

If you are looking for adventure, you can find it here. This 1930's jungle expedition on a string of mysterious islands is the place you'd want to be. This is one of the most mysterious areas, and legend has it that a curse resides here.

When you enter from the Imagination Ring, you are immersed in an African area. Here, you are immersed in the culture with African drums, wooden huts, and tribal African cultural items all around. Zimbadi's Traders are near the entrance. Tarzan: Live in the Wild plays in a theater overlooking the water. Near the theater is the bridge to the World of Pixar. Chaka Shack is a restaurant on the right side of the area. Nearby that is a wooden cabin where you can start the Adventure Lagoon Explorers interactive experience. In there, you meet Lord Isaac Mystic and Albert and are given replicas of the treasure map. It also has clues to find the Objects of Revelation. In the Booka Huts, you can meet characters from The Lion King and The Jungle Book.

Crossing a bridge, you head over to an Asian section, based off of India. In the center of the island is Temple of Danger, a roller coaster similar to Indiana Jones and the Temple of Peril in Paris. This is where the path to one of the relics are. After the ride, place a talisman on the map on the tablet, which is located throughout the land, and it'll reveal your next clue. You can buy merchandise at Adventure Outfitters. In the meantime, Bengal Barbecue offers a BBQ menu. Your next clue leads you to The Digsite, where you dig for pottery. This is located on the southern side of the temple. After that, your last clue will take you to the Jungle River Expedition, a next-generation Jungle Cruise that goes around the islands, taking you past several wild animals and untold mysteries. You virtually obtain one of the Objects, a magnifying glass, during the ride. The ride has its entrance on the Asian island, but it goes around the African and Caribbean islands too.

On a bridge from the Asian section, you are led to a Polynesian section. In front of you in a theater where Moana: A Homecoming Celebration is held. Afterwards, you can get your next clue. To the left of the theater is a shop called Maui's Market and to the right is a restaurant called Tiki Table.  If you keep going left, you will find Tiki Shrine, an explorational ruins experience where you can explore the ruins. Afterwards, you get another clue. To the left of the ruins is another bridge to the World of Pixar. To the right of Tiki Table is an ancient Polynesian Temple where you ride a jeep. This is Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Tiki Queen. In this version, Indiana Jones himself is the "Sallah" of the ride (meaning he's the one sending you into the temple) although he isn't happy about it. The Eye of the Tiki Queen is another one of the Objects. After the ride, you can shop at Indiana Jones Adventure Outpost.

Finally, if you cross over the bridge going north from the Asian Island, then you go to a Caribbean island. There are several shops and restaurants here, including Puerto Fargo Tavern, Joshamee's Juice, Captain Jack's Pirate Port, Treasure Island Gifts, Caribbean Plaza, and Blackbeard's Booty. Furthest to the right near the entrance to Fantasyland is Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Golden Ship, a ride similar to Shanghai's Battle for the Sunken Treasure, but a different storyline. In this, you help Captain Jack Sparrow locate a shipwreck full of lost treasure, but you have to get there before Captain Barbossa does, and you encounter mermaids, monkeys, cannibals, and even Davy Jones himself. Captain Jack's Pirate Port is actually a Blue Bayou-type restaurant that allows you to see passing boats on the ride. After the ride, you get another clue. This takes you to the Swords of Steel Stunt Show, a Pirates of the Caribbean stunt show where you are once again sent back to the Golden Age of Piracy and see Captain Jack rushing to keep a magic hourglass safe from rival pirates. Both this and Pirates of the Caribbean build into the backstory, with the ride and show showing that Captain Jack actually was a rival to George L. Shadowwave. After the show, you get a final clue taking you to the furthest left part of the land before a bridge. This is the station for Mount Adventure Railroad, where you go up into the mountain's old Lunite mines and rush to escape the wrath of the Abominable Snowman. You get the lost Lunite Sand, another Object, on the ride.

Once you have all three Objects of Revelation (or if you just want to and are not playing in the explorers), you cross over the bridge on the left and follow the trail into a snowy area. This is where you find Shadowwave Chateau, a re-imagined version of the Haunted Mansion. Like Phantom Manor had a wild west theme, Shadowwave Chateau has a pirate theme. It contains several characters from the original ride, including Madame Leota and the Hitch-hiking Ghosts (redesigned to look like pirates), there are numerous new scenes and characters and a different version of a Doom Buggy. Shadowwave's ghost serves as the Ghost Host of this attraction, and the stretching portraits tell more of the backstory behind the area. You also get a bunch of Pirates of the Caribbean references throughout the rides, including a changing portrait of Captain Barbossa turning into a skeleton and a bunch of normal-looking pirates turning into Davy Jones's cursed sailors. After the ride, you receive your final clue and follow a secret trail to a secret cave where you ride an interactive, totally immersive experience like Rise of the Resistance called Secret of the Treasure Caves, where you find Shadowwave's gold, accompanied by Lord Mystic, Albert, Indiana Jones, and others.

This land has a backstory setting up the attractions and the interactive adventure with it. As you experience the attractions and the interactive quest, the backstory builds up.
A long time ago, tribal sailors from Africa, Asia, and Polynesia traveled across the world. Each and every one of them found a string of islands, completely untouched by any other man. All of these settlers colonized the area, and although there was fighting among them at first, they all settled and made peace within the land. They eventually began to share their cultures, also learning more about the islands which they had found at the same time.
However, many centuries later, a man known as George L. Shadowwave (born 1677), a cunning and malicious pirate, had come to the islands with his crew. Shadowwave had been known for robbing many ports of call around the world and taking their most valuable treasures. He had been looking for a place to build a location to keep all of his treasure, and eventually, he found the islands. With the resources on the island, he had a mansion constructed for him, which he named "Shadowwave Chateau."
The inhabitants of the islands were not thrilled to have intruders in their lands, so they tried to force them out. However, Shadowwave was resourceful. He cunningly set up a scheme. He had his first mate, Robert Greyman (born 1681) go out and gain the trust of the tribes. Through months of learning their cultures, Greyman got information on them and secretly used this against them. However, he disliked doing this because he had come to believe that these were the rightful people of the islands. Plus, he had learned that Makaturo, a spirit fabled to inhabit the islands, would send punishment to those who disturbed them.
But one day, some pirates went climbing up the tallest mountain in the islands, which they named "Mount Adventure," and found a substance called Lunite. It was a glowing mineral said to give immortality to its wearer. This brought pirates from all over the Caribbean here, and eventually, a big pirate port was built. Like Shadowwave, some were there to stay, while others were just temporarily visiting. This did mean that the chance of having his treasure stolen was higher, so Shadowwave locked his treasure away somewhere. His only link to it was a map with a bunch of clues to it, which he hid in a picture frame and threw into the ocean.
But as more and more pirates came, more chaos broke out. The tribes were furious that pirates had come and colonized their land, so they declared war. There was violence in the land, killing many on both sides. Shadowwave fully supported the pirates, but Greyman secretly supported the tribes, since he had fallen in love with the Asian tribal princess.
But it is said that Makaturo was angered by this. One dark night in 1707, a mysterious force, some say a curse, struck the islands in the form of a deadly hurricane that caused many peculiar things to happen. All of the temples closed their doors, and a few were badly damaged. Five unlucky souls on Mount Adventure, four pirates and an African man, disappeared in an incident blamed on an Abominable Snowman. During this, a lot of pirates were killed, including Shadowwave and most of his crew.
Greyman survived, and he went looking for his lost love. He searched all over, but couldn't find her. He went looking for her in his captain's manor, but never came out. What happened to both him and the princess are a mystery.
Years passed since the hurricane. Believing the yeti rumor, Mount Adventure was left alone and any expedition up there was prohibited. Shadowwave Chateau and the area around it were trapped in an eternal winter for unknown reasons. Rumor has it that Shadowwave's ghost haunts the chateau, along with the departed spirits of his crew. All of the temples opened, but those who entered never returned. All of these mysteries stayed around for a long time.
The year is now 1937, two hundred and thirty years after the hurricane. Explorers such as Indiana Jones have come to explore the islands and find stuff for research. The Society of Explorers and Adventurers have come over to the islands in a group led by Lord Isaac John Mystic, son of the late Lord Henry Mystic. His father had actually discovered Shadowwave's treasure map in the ocean, and kept it at Mystic Manor up until his death. On his deathbed, Henry had given his son the map. Along with his monkey friend Albert, they traveled to the islands with the SEA members. They met Indiana Jones there, and although there were some different opinions, they agreed to help each other find the treasure.
Now you, as a member of the SEA, have been recruited to travel to the islands and help find the treasure, but in order to do that, you must follow the clues and find the three Objects of Revelation.

This was a fun area for me to make. I knew that I did not want a traditional Adventureland when I began developing the park, but something new. I decided to give it a whole backstory to make it more interesting. Not just that, but I tied together the SEA, Indiana Jones, and Pirates of the Caribbean universes together with this. I actually features this in a book called Yoshi's Great Caribbean Adventure, where they had to get the gold from Shadowwave himself. This was a hard idea to put in because I wanted everything to fit in a way. I originally had a South American tribe here, but I decided to replace it with a Polynesian tribe to mix things up a bit. One thing for sure, I am very proud of how this area turned out. I feel like it will be a fresh new take on the Adventureland concept.

  1. This area is pure genius. The detailed backstory and adventure quest make it completely unique....like not just a place, but a complete experience! Now I agree with you and I think THIS is my favorite section. I could totally see this whole park so far as a reality. I’m so impressed with your ability to do this. We really do need to learn how we can share your ideas with Disney. I’m so proud of you! There is not one little thing that I don’t like about this area. It’s awesome!!
